The goal of a therapist bio is for you to get a sense of me as a therapist and whether I might be the right fit to support you. My personal goal in writing this bio is for you to have enough information to make that choice but to also have a more informed understanding of how I generally work with clients and the type of space I try to create for you.
So to start off, yes, I am a trained therapist; Registered Psychotherapist (RP) and belong to the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO). I have a Master’s of Arts in Counselling Psychology from Yorkville University, as well as a B.A. in Psychology and a B.A. in Criminology from Carleton University. I'm a mom, a military spouse, dog lover and donut expert.
I have spent my entire professional life in helping roles, through community and outreach programs and as a therapist. My role as a therapist has by far been the most challenging and fulfilling and one I am very grateful to have stepped into. I have been fortunate over the years to focus on a variety of populations including children and adolescents, parents, adults, as well as those individuals within the justice system, survivors of human trafficking, CAF members and Veterans and military and veteran spouses. I offer services in-person in Ottawa and virtually to clients residing in Ontario.
Approach
I come to the therapy space with a belief that how we experience the world is unique to each individual. Because of this belief, I do not use a one-size-fits-all approach in supporting you on your healing journey. I use an integrative approach drawing from evidenced-based practices to ensure that you feel supported and understood. My approach comes from my belief that you are the expert in you and my role is to follow your lead. On that note, I am also a “tell it like it is” therapist, which means I will empathetically let you know if I think you are avoiding going down certain paths or roads that might support healing, but that you ultimately get to decide what path we take.
Here’s a little therapy secret for you. Did you know that if you hate your therapist, or you can’t trust your therapist, it is highly unlikely that you will benefit from the sessions? When we say it like that it makes sense, but often clients don’t prioritize ensuring the therapist is the best fit for them first and foremost. What I come to the therapy relationship with is an understanding that I need to earn your trust and a desire to create a space for you that feels accepting, open and empathetic and a willingness to walk alongside you as your work through past and present challenges. If you are curious whether I might be the right fit, or I can answer any questions about my therapy process please contact me through the CONTACT tab to set up a free 15-minute consult.
Thank you for for being here,
Sarah
